YOUR OWN WORDS

Scratching the surface by sally delancy                               august 2017

Picture
When he finally speaks,
His answers are so vague,
He tells me not to worry
That he is doing well,
But his eyes! - They cannot lie,
There within such sorrow resides.

Now, this is a man who’s grown silent,
This is a man who’s lost his way,
My soul so bleeds to see him suff’ring
His days now drenched in pain.
With all my heartfelt reassurances
Each moment remains the same,
Though I try,
I can’t deny,
I’m only scratching the surface.

Stumbling in the dark,
Familiar places now unknown.
Centuries far apart,
When he’s near - I’m all alone.
He knows I care for him,
Why doesn’t he confide in me?

I once knew this man!
He oozed this fulgent light!
A suave panache till,
That dreadful, stormy night
We should be grateful for our lives
But he thinks he’s not whole,
He has murmured half as much.

Now this is a man who’s grown weary
Here is a man who’s lost his will.
His carefully-guarded expressions
Do not beguile me.
Reciting my soothing reassurances
His demons I pray - he would slay
For - though I try,
I can’t deny,
I’m only scratching the surface.
